Plastic Free Grocery Shopping

In this sophisticated world, it takes quite a good amount of resistance to turn back a wave of bad influence. At this time, all of us should all concentrate on helping this world to battle plastic pollution the way we can if we are to sustain life on this planet. This topic has been debated over a long time and many alternatives to tackle this problem have been invented. Today I’m going to walk you through on how to do plastic free grocery shopping and the way you can help to save this world.

Your government may or may not have implemented any laws to prevent the usage of plastic packaging in your country, but there are a few things you could do yourself as a concerned citizen as well.

No Single-use Plastic Grocery Bags

Yeah, it’s so much easier to put all your groceries into those plastic bags which take ages to decay and might as well end up in some creature’s gut. Sure, it doesn’t cost a penny to purchase them either. But the impact from one single action you take could create repercussions haunting many generations to come. ‘It’s just one bag’ you say. 1 Million people thinking the same way would add 1 million bags to the environment. So, please consider taking a reusable bag when you go shopping which would ultimately save nature the trouble of having to decay a good number of plastic bags.

Refuse Food Wrapped in Plastic

I’ve seen hundreds of oranges and apples wrapped in thin plastic sheets in supermarkets and I’m sure you must have too. They say it helps in preserving the food for a long time but do you really need to put an apple in your mouth which has been sitting there on the supermarket shelves for so long? Try and find a fruit vendor in your area and get those fresh-looking avocados before they end up in another supermarket. This goes the same for all the other plastic-wrapped food you find in the market as well. If you’re really lucky you might be able to find a package-free shop close by. In those shops, you can take your own bags and containers to purchase plastic packaging-free food to promote plastic free grocery shopping.

Plastic Straws is a No Go

Did you know that in the US alone, 500 million plastic straws are used every day? Yes, that’s right. 500 million of those suckers end up in trash bins every day. You can easily prevent this by using a reusable metal or wooden straw which can be easily purchased on Amazon or eBay. Carrying a straw with you sounds like so much trouble and very un-cool, but the straw comes with a little pouch and it can rest in your side bag pretty well. Also, what’s cooler than saving the world? Come one. So next time you’re enjoying a soda with your friends, make sure to opt-out the plastic straw or use your own reusable straw.

Bring Your Own Container

For meat, fish, and seafood items, you could bring your own containers from home. So the salesperson at the counter doesn’t have to put on several bags to cover the smell. I’m pretty sure you can find a few containers lying around in the house or stuffed inside a cupboard. Why not put them to use? These small steps could save up to thousands of single-use plastic bags in a year. Plus you could actively participate in saving the world with plastic free grocery shopping as an individual.
